The Dengue
Dengue disease, or famously known as dengue fever, is a recurring illness that mainly affects the population of tropical and subtropical climates. With over 120 countries falling under this climate, the data reveals that approximately 40,000 deaths annually occur due to the dengue virus, since it is one the most important mosquito-borne viral diseases in humans.
Spread by the several species of female mosquitos of the Aedes family, a vaccine to cure the dengue is already approved and available commercially in many countries. Read on to know more about dengue, its examination, and tests, etc.

Dengue Fever IgG Antibody Test – An Overview
What is the Dengue IgG Antibody Test?
There is a Dengue IgG antibody test that is used to diagnose a current or recent infection. IgG and IgM are the two types of antibodies that are produced in response to a dengue viral infection. Detecting these antibodies helps evaluate the situation of the disease and plan a treatment accordingly.
Why Dengue IgG Antibody Test is Done?
To diagnose the presence of the dengue virus, a dengue IgG antibody test is ordered. The doctor will advise this test when a person shows the signs and symptoms listed below:
- Developed fever after visiting a tropical or subtropical country
- Sudden high fever (>103°F)
- Nose or gum bleeding
- Severe joint, muscle pain
- Severe pain at the back of eyes and headache
After further evaluation of physical symptoms, your doctor may advise a molecular or antibody test for dengue such as an IgG antibody test.
It is worth noting that two weeks after an antibody test, a blood sample will again be drawn to examine if the count of antibodies is increasing.
What are the Parameters Measured in the Dengue IgG Test?
The major parameters for dengue viral are non-structural protein 1, IgG, and IgM antibodies. The antibodies can be detected after 5 days from the onset of symptoms. IgG levels can even be measured for many months or years after the infection.
It is through the combination of positive or negative results of IgG and IgM antibodies, along with other evaluation and medical history that your doctor interprets the current infection. For more, read the Interpretations of Dengue IgG Antibody test results below.
Any Prerequisites for Dengue IgG Antibody Test?
There are no such pre-requisites before giving your blood sample for the Dengue IgG antibody test. However, if your sample is going for other tests along with the antibody test, you may require fasting for 9-12 hours before giving the sample. Check this with your doctor or health professional beforehand.
How Dengue IgG Antibody Test is Performed?
Your blood sample is required to perform a Dengue NS1 test. The healthcare professional will use a thin needle and draw the blood from your veins in one of your arms near the elbow. Whether you choose a hospital, clinic, laboratory, or home collection service to give your blood sample, the process remains the same.

Interpretations of Dengue IgG Antibody Test Results
To interpret the dengue viral correctly, a dengue IgG test is done along with IgG. The negative and positive results of these antibodies give way to better interpretation. For instance, the negative results of both IgG and IgM indicate no dengue viral exposure but symptoms are due to another cause. It can also signify the level of antibodies is too less to count.
The table below shows testing results scenarios:
IgG | IgM | Possible Interpretations |
---|---|---|
Positive | Positive | Infection present |
Negative | Positive | Infection present |
Positive | Low or Negative | Infection in the past |
3 times increase | Low or Negative | Recent Infection |
Negative | Negative | Too soon to say or another cause of symptoms |
