Dengue Fever NS1 Antigen Test – An Overview

What is the Dengue NS1 Antigen Test?

Dengue non-structural protein 1 (NS1) test is an alternative biomarker test for the diagnosis of acute dengue infection. Through the NS1 test, a dengue virus can be detected within 24 hours up to 9 days after the onset of the symptoms. This test detects the specific protein that gets released into the blood after an attack by the dengue virus. This test is usually advised within 8 days of the viral attack.

The main purpose of the Dengue NS1 test is to evaluate the presence of non-structural protein 1 in the blood. This protein gets secreted into the bloodstream after the body is infected with the dengue virus. NS1 is detectable only during the acute phase of the infection. This test is developed for use in serum.

There are mainly two parameters to measure in the Dengue NS1 test.

  • Positive result: A positive NS1 test confirms the presence of dengue virus infection in the blood. However, it doesn’t indicate any serotype information. Thus, it doesn’t affect the care and medicine a patient needs but is needed only for surveillance purposes.
  • Negative result: A negative NS1 test confirms no infection. However, it doesn’t rule out dengue completely. Further tests like IgM antibodies are required to determine possible exposure to the dengue virus.

There are no such pre-requisites before giving your blood sample for the Dengue IgG antibody test. However, if your sample is going for other tests along with the antibody test, you may require fasting for 9-12 hours before giving the sample. Check this with your doctor or health professional beforehand.

Your blood sample is required to perform a Dengue NS1 test. The healthcare professional will use a thin needle and draw the blood from your veins in one of your arms near the elbow. Whether you choose a hospital, clinic, laboratory, or home collection service to give your blood sample, the process remains the same.
