Fasting Blood Sugar testing is performed for:

• Examining yourself for prediabetes and diabetes.

• Determining whether an abnormally low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia) exists. To diagnose the aetiology of hypoglycemia, blood levels of insulin and a protein called C-peptide may be measured in addition to blood glucose levels.

Fasting blood sugar (FBS) is a test that evaluates blood glucose levels after you haven’t eaten for at least eight hours. It is frequently the first test used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes.

Consuming and digesting carbohydrates results in the formation of glucose (blood sugar). Glucose is required by your body to give energy for daily activities. The body requires insulin to allow glucose to enter cells and be used as energy. If insulin is not present, blood glucose levels will rise.
