HIV, HBsAg, HCV, and Syphilis Test Package – An Overview
What Is the HIV, HBsAg, HCV, and Syphilis Test Package?
Human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV-1/2), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are among the blood-borne viruses that can be transmitted via parenteral nutrition, blood transfusion, and sexual contact. They cause severe morbidity and mortality when transmitted through transfusion of blood and blood products, not just by establishing asymptomatic chronic infections with occasional consequences. Chronic HIV, HBV, and HCV infections are important public health issues.
Patients attending STD clinics, men who have sex with men (MSM) clinics, and drug addiction centers are considered high-risk populations in India, while mothers attending prenatal clinics are seen as a proxy for the general community.
Hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections continue to be the most serious health concerns in the transfusion of blood and blood products around the world. As a result, screening tests for HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti-HIV, and RPR or VDRL for Treponema pallidum are required before blood and blood product transfusion.
Why the HIV, HBsAg, HCV, Syphilis Test is Done?
The test’s goal was to determine the risk of co-infection with HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and syphilis among patients who visited sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics, antenatal clinics (ANC), and Ob-Gyn outpatients department (OPD) clinics.
How to Prepare for the HIV, HBsAg, HCV, and Syphilis Tests?
This testing requires no extra preparation and can be taken at any time of day.
How is the HIV, HBsAg, HCV, and Syphilis Tests Performed?
During a blood test, or blood draw, you can likely go through the following:
- A healthcare provider will use a tourniquet to evaluate your arms for an easily accessible vein while you sit in a chair.
- They’ll sterilize and sanitize the region once they’ve found a vein.
- A tiny needle will be inserted into your vein to take a blood sample. This may feel like a little annoyance.
- A tiny amount of blood will gather in a test tube after they inject the needle.
- They’ll withdraw the needle once they’ve collected enough blood to test and apply a cotton ball or gauze to the wound to stop the bleeding.
- They’ll cover the wound with a bandage, and you’ll be done.
Risks/Side Effects of HIV, HBsAg, HCV, and Syphilis Test
The test is entirely risk-free. However, because this test requires a needle prick to get a blood sample, hematoma (blood collection under the skin), or bruising at the site of needle prick may occur in very rare cases.

THINGS TO KNOW AFTER GETTING TESTED
Understanding the HIV, HBsAg, HCV, and Syphilis Test Results
HIV:
A negative HIV test result indicates that there were no HIV antibodies discovered in the test sample. If a person has had no possible HIV exposure within the test’s window period, they are considered HIV-negative. If a person has possible exposure during the test’s window period, HIV testing must be performed after the window period has passed.
Positive test findings suggest the presence of an antibody against HIV-1/2. If the initial test results in a positive result, indicating that there is HIV evidence, a confirmatory test will be undertaken to look for the virus in a different method. If the confirmatory test also comes back positive, the results are considered conclusive confirmation that you have HIV.
If you are HIV-positive, additional tests will be done to determine the optimal medicine combination depending on the genetic composition of your virus. Other tests will be conducted regularly to assess your immune system’s strength (CD4 count) and to monitor the level of virus in your blood before and throughout treatment (viral load)
HCV:
A non-reactive or negative antibody test indicates that you are not infected with the hepatitis C virus at this time.
A reactive or positive antibody test indicates that you have had hepatitis C at some point in your life.
A positive antibody test result should be followed by an HCV RNA test to measure the amount of Hepatitis C virus in the blood.
HBsAg:
The absence of hepatitis B surface antigen is shown by a non-reactive test. Reactive test findings indicate the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen, which is used to monitor levels during the disease. However, it cannot distinguish between the stages of hepatitis B virus infection, more testing is required to identify whether the infection is “acute” or “chronic” hepatitis B.
Syphilis:
If your blood sample test results are negative, it means that your blood does not contain syphilis antibodies and that you are not infected with the bacteria. If your test for syphilis antibodies test is positive, you may have syphilis. However, your doctor will advise you to undergo another test known as the Treponemal tests such as TPHA & FTA-AbS to validate your results.
