What is quarantine?

The word quarantine is the word which has become too popular from last one year or two. This word has been included in almost all the speeches, articles, guidelines, etc. issued relating to coronavirus in the last one and a half year.

Basically, quarantine is a period of time for which a human or an animal suffering from an infectious disease is kept isolated from the rest of the world in order to curb the spread of the disease. When the covid-19 virus erupted in the year 2020, this word had become a household term. Any person infected with the coronavirus has to remain in quarantine for a stipulated time period.

When should you quarantine?

A person has to undergo the quarantine period whenever he/she has had frequent interaction with someone who tested positive for covid-19. This is done to monitor the symptoms of the person quarantined. If he/she does not show any signs of covid-19 infection, he/she are allowed to get out of quarantine.

One also needs to quarantine when he/she has been tested positive for the coronavirus infection and isolate themselves from the rest of the members at the earliest.

One also needs to inform about this to other persons whom he/she have been in contact with in the recent time so that they could also quarantine themselves. Once the person recovers and has no symptoms of the covid-19 virus, he/she is allowed to get out of the quarantine.

How long should you quarantine ?

If you are in close touch with someone who has covid-19, a 14-day quarantine is suggested. A 14-day quarantine is the most effective method for avoiding the spread of covid-19, and it may be essential in certain circumstances or settings. If you haven’t acquired any symptoms after 10 days, your quarantine may be lifted.Until the 14th day following your last close encounter, keep an eye out for symptoms of covid-19. In some conditions or contexts, a quarantine period of this length may not be appropriate. Quarantine regulations should be checked with your local health agency, business, or institution. If you haven’t acquired any symptoms and have a negative covid test result on day 6 or 7, your quarantine may be lifted after 7 days (within 48 hours of the end of quarantine). Until the 14th day following your last close encounter, keep an eye out for COVID-19 signs. In some conditions or contexts, a quarantine period of this length may not be appropriate. Quarantine regulations should be checked with your local health agency, business, or institution.

What is self-quarantine?

It is to be known that one can quarantine himself/herself at the individual level too. On a personal level, it implies maintaining a sufficient distance for a stipulated time between yourself and another person so that you do not become sick and others do not get infected too. Individuals are generally asked to self-quarantine following known contact with an infected person or after returning from a location where instances of the illness are frequently reported by health officials to limit transmission of a contagious disease during the pandemic. Self-quarantine mainly takes place within a home.

Guidelines to follow for 14 day quarantine?

The person home quarantined for 14 days should stay in a well-ventilated single room with an attached/separate toilet if possible. If you have to share a room with another family member, keep a gap of at least 1 metre between you and them. He/she must keep a safe distance from the elderly, pregnant women, children, and individuals with co-morbidities in the home and restrict his/her movements in the household. He/she should strictly refrain from leaving the house and should not attend any social gatherings like birthday parties, weddings, etc. Hands should be washed as often as possible with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Dishes, drinking glasses, cups, dining utensils, towels, beds, and other domestic things should not be shared with other people at home.If symptoms such as cough, fever, or trouble breathing occur, he/she should contact the local health centre right once.Only a designated family member should be authorized for taking care of such a person.

What to do in quarantine ?

Quarantine period can be mentally tiring and can exhaust a person inside out. No doubt one should follow all the safety measures to keep themselves and their loved ones safe from the deadly covid-19 virus. One can involve themselves in productive activities restricted to a room to pass their time well in the quarantine period. This helps in keeping away stress and anxiety from your mind and helps you grow as a person while you are not allowed to move out of a room. Apart from that, one must eat healthy and do some yoga or exercise to keep themselves fit and healthy. This also adds to your immunity and makes your body stronger and effective against coronavirus.

Quarantine rules to follow while travelling

You may have come into contact with covid-19 throughout your travels. Even if you don’t have any symptoms or feel well, you might still be infected and transfer the virus to others. One must get tested after they travel and should quarantine themselves from the rest of the people to avoid any risks associated with the spread of virus. Stay at home and self-quarantine for the full 7 days, even if you test negative. If your test comes back positive, isolate yourself to avoid infecting others. Whether you are tested or not, stay away from those who are at a higher risk of serious sickness for 14 days.

Conclusion

The times are testing but, this time shall pass too. We have been engulfed under this massive pandemic and to come out of it, we have to be harsh on ourselves and our loved ones by maintaining physical distance from them and undergoing quarantine if we have coronavirus symptoms. These methods will surely one day prove to be fruitful and help us in eradicating the fatal disease. Let’s be hopeful and adhere to the quarantine guidelines when required.
